  • Specific Objectives: the objectives established by the profile of Graduate in Maritime Engineering and Maritime Transport
  • General Objectives: common to the three degree-level courses of Sailing School, Engineering and Naval Radio-Electronics
  • Transitory Provision four of R.D. 1393/2007 establishes that the current general guidelines on both the academic (Diploma in Maritime Navigation) and professional qualifications (Merchant Navy Pilot) shall be applicable to university qualifications relating to regulated professional activities.The academic aims are divided into two parts:
  • The main aim of the degree is to provide the knowledge, basic technologies and the skills and abilities required by a Merchant Navy Pilot for performing his or her job
  • The professional competencies and reponsibilities obtained upon completion of this degree not only qualify students to work aboard merchant vessels, but also in any other activity within the maritime sector that is directly related to sailing vessels or work in companies involved in the commerce generated by sailing vessels
    General Skills
    • Knowledge of basic and technological subjects that enable them to learn new methods and theories, and to provide them with the versatility necessary to adapt to new situations
    • Ability to communicate; Organised presentation of ideas, orally and in writing, based on respect for fundamental rights, equality between men and women, promoting human rights and the values of a culture of peace and democracy
    • Ability to work in a group, in a multilingual and multi-disciplinary environment, based on respect for fundamental rights, equality between men and women and a guarantee of universal access; ability to generate repots to transmit knowledge and results; ability to learn and constantly stay abreast of changes
    • Problem-solving ability and understanding (basic training)
    • Knowledge, use and application of different principles and system aboard the ship (maritime training)
    • Knowledge and ability to apply and calculate (specific training)

    Specific Skills
    • Application of Navigation techniques for determining position, heading, time, speed and distance; and for climatological and synoptic sailing
    • Ability to calculate different kinds of Tides
    • Ability to apply loading, transport, storage and handling techniques for all kinds of goods, taking into account the optimisation and safety of ships
    • Anchoring, towing in harbour and mooring vessels. Manoeuvres in confined waters
    • Radio-communication systems. Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
    • Ability to protect the marine environment and apply environmentally sustainability criteria to maritime transport and the different techniques for preventing pollution of the marine environment
    • Fire-fighting, survival and abandon ship procedures, food conservation in maritime transport and air conditioning, ventilation, cooling and combustion
    • Knowledge of the development, application, inspection, optimisation and building of the ship
    • Ability to act as an officer aboard civilian vessels without any kind of limit and to captain civilian vessels up to 5,000 GT, once the requirements of the Maritime Administration have been met
    • Determine the position of the vessel using different methods
    • Ability to plan and control the meteorological-oceanographic course
    • Keep watch safely
    • Use different radio navigation equipment properly
    • Properly respond to different emergency situations and to a Distress signal at sea
    • Correct use of the standard vocabulary of maritime English I.M.O.
    • Accurately perform the different manoeuvres the ship in rescue, mooring or anchoring situations
    • Proper loading, handling and stowage of various goods
    • Maintain good stability of the ship
    • Ability to maintain the safety and protection of persons on board
    • Monitor compliance with legislative requirements

Any student meeting the entry requirements established in current legislation may apply for a place on the degree in Maritime Navigation & Transport. However, we would recommend applicants to have studied a baccalaureate in Science & Technology. We also recommend students to have studied the following subjects: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Technical Drawing.Generally speaking, the ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics:
  • An understanding of English, equivalent to that needed for the university entrance (PAU) exams
  • A desire to work as a Merchant Mariner
  • A capacity for analysis and logical reasoning
  • An interest in the science and technology used in machinery and industrial systems
  • An interest in the science and technology used in the maritime world
